Deputy Noel Coonan has contacted the Revenue Commissioners about officials from the department seeking details of people cutting turf near Newport.

The matter came to light on Tipp FM yesterday when Councillor John “Rocky” McGrath questioned why officials visited Shower Bog in Newport over the weekend and quizzed contractors as to what homeowners were drawing turf from the bogs

In reply to Deputy Coonan's query Revenue point out that they cannot comment on the tax affairs of individuals or businesses.

Revenue regularly carries out field visits to various types of contractors to ensure that they are correctly registered for all relevant taxes.

In particular the reply from the Revenue office highlights that fact that there are no tax implications for private individuals harvesting their own turf for personal use.
