While the Cabinet is set to give the green light to Health Minister James Reilly's plans to reorganise the state's hospital into six regional groups, a decision on the south-east could be deferred.
The restructuring would result in South Tipperary and Waterford being linked to Cork – however strong opposition has been expressed to any such move in both Tipp and Waterford.
According to media reports the decision to re-align the south east is likely to be deferred because of the opposition in Waterford to what many see as the downgrading of the city's regional hospital.
The restructuring of the hospital network is on the agenda for tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting.
