Dawn Fresh Foods workers meet with Jobs Minister.

A meeting between Jobs Minister Richard Bruton and workers of the Dawn Fresh Foods plant in Fethard has been described as very helpful.

Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food Tom Hayes organised the meeting which took place in Dublin last evening.

Dawn Fresh Foods is involved in the production of frozen and chilled products for the UK and Irish markets and last month announced that it would be closing its production facility in Fethard with the loss of 104 jobs.

The company has blamed a steep decline in sales over the past number of years, along with the cost of raw materials and sterling exchange rates, for the closure.

Cashel based Minister of State Tom Hayes said it was important that the workers were given the opportunity to express their views and concerns to Minister Bruton.

The plant will be closed on a phased basis, with all redundancies complete by the end of the year.

Last evenings meeting was also attended by representatives from Enterprise Ireland.

Minister Hayes described the meeting as conciliatory and says it’s a work in progress.

Enterprise Ireland have completed a full inventory of the facility and will now pursue their marketing of the plant on a global scale.
