Frances Fitzgerald made the comments after TDs Mick Wallace and Clare Daly were arrested and jailed briefly yesterday for failing to pay a court fine.

The pair were fined for taking part in a protest over the use of Shannon Airport by the US military.

Minister Fitzgerald says the justice system treats politicians the same as everyone else:

“Deputies Daly and Wallace have no more or no less rights than anyone else when it comes to the criminal justice system” she said.

“There's an obligation on all of us to obey the law – that's the point of a democracy”.

“And I think that obligation is all the greater in public representatives – who are free to pursue their causes in parliament as elected representatives” she added.
