Almost six hundred thousand euro in savings will have to be made in North Tipperary as a result of cuts to Local Government funding.

That was the stark warning made at yesterdays meeting of North Tipp County Council.

County Manager Joe McGrath told Councillors he has identified €591,560 worth of savings which would have to be made to meet their budget.

He said housing grants may be affected but stressed he was doing all in his power to avoid any cuts to services.

The manager said the council has taken measures to increase the collection of the household charge which has now been paid by 66% of people in North Tipp.

He said he would use this figure when appealing to the department against further funding cuts being imposed on the council but warned that if savings were not made he would be forced to look at cuts to existing services.
