The Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council has vowed to fight any plans to close Cashel Courthouse.
Declan Burgess – who is a native of Cashel – was reacting to plans to relocate the court sittings to Clonmel.
The proposals are also understood to include moving Carrick on Suir sittings.
While accepting that the historic court building in Cashel is in need of some modernisation Councillor Burgess says closing it is simply not acceptable.
He told Tipp Today earlier that the relocation of court sittings from Tipperary Town to Nenagh some years ago cannot be repeated.
“Justice should be accessible for everyone.
“Centralising these type of services in one location is really regressive. This decision – it’s Youghal, Carrick on Suir and Cashel to close in the Autumn – and centralise it all. I just think that decision is a serious mistake. I think it represents a shortsighted move without considering the impact it will have on people who are trying to access the courts. But also for the negative impact on the business community in Cashel.”
