A support group in Tipperary is highlighting the need for appropriate accommodation to be provided for members of the Traveller community.

This follows an incident in Clonmel yesterday when council officials and Gardai arrived at the halting site in Powerstown to remove caravans on foot of a court order dating back to 2013 with regard to illegal structures there.

Following negotiations between the Tipperary Rural Traveller Project and the council no evictions took place.

According to Mags Casey of the Travellers Project the families involved were born and reared at Powerstown and when they started their own families wanted to remain there.

She says Tipperary County Council needs to provide the right kind of accommodation to meet the needs of a young single mother of three children, one of whom has special needs.

Mags Casey says this woman needs the support of her extended family close by.
