Councillors critical of Department reaction to horse cruelty case

The Department of Agriculture have been criticised for their handling of animals which have been left unattended on private property, following the devastating discovery of seven corpses of horses in Clonmel this week.
Councillors at the Clonmel Borough District meeting discussed the issue, saying that the department was ‘not pulling its weight’ in relation to the matter.

It was noted that the public are often misinformed in believing that this is within the local council’s remit. The council are unable to take action on animal cruelty or neglect when the animal is left on private property.

Several councillors claimed that they received no response when they contacted the dedicated helpline to report incidents of Animal Cruelty, and their calls were left unanswered in some cases.
