The merging of North and South Tipperary County Councils has potential savings of €30 million over the 5 year lifetime of the council.

That’s according to the Implementation Plan published by the Tipperary Reorganisation Implementation Group.

Local Government Minister Phil Hogan says he's pleased with the progress being made – the councils will merge following the 2014 Local Elections after 173 years of separation.

The Minister also stressed the non-financial benefits of unification – he feels the new Tipperary County Council will be better positioned to promote the interests of the county and contribute to job creation and the recovery effort generally.
