The importance of Men’s Sheds has been raised in the Dáil by a Tipperary TD.

Deputy Ryan O’Meara highlighted the prospect of Nenagh Men’s Shed having to close due to the unsustainable running costs involved.

He outlined the situation to Mental Health Minister Mary Butler.

On Tipp Today earlier the Fianna Fáil representative said the Minister committed to contacting Tipperary County Council about securing a space for the Men’s Shed and similar groups.

“She said she’d enquire into it as well which is a help and I appreciate that too. My overall point in the Dáil – and this is a broader policy discussion but one I think we really, really need in the country – is state funding for municipally provided spaces. So in other words our local authorities I believe and I guess the details of this have to be worked out but that the municipal authorities would be able to provide community spaces because there’s the Men’s Shed and there’s the Women’s Shed in Nenagh but there are so many other groups I know of that need a space.”
