The Ukrainian community in Cahir have been helping in with efforts to clear footpaths in the town.
Many of them are members of the local Tidy Towns group and offered their services over the weekend.
Local Councillor Andy Moloney said they literally kept pestering him to allow them to help.
“There yesterday I said look I’ll meet ye at the shed and give ye whatever shovels and things ye need and they went about cleaning the paths, especially on the bridge in Cahir where it was unsafe. It had been gritted by the council but the grit and the salt hadn’t been penetrating. So they got down to work and when they were finished the council came on and gave it a sprinkling of salt so it made it safe.
“In their own country that’s what they do – they’re used to snowfall and they’re used to clearing their areas. Its different cultures really. Everybody is doing their bit and these guys don’t want any recognition.”
