Uisce Éireann will be holding public consultation meetings this week in North Tipp in relation to the controversial Shannon Pipeline.
The project – which is estimated to cost anywhere between €3 billion and €10 billion – would see water extracted from the Shannon at Parteen Basin and piped 170 kilometres to Dublin.
Uisce Éireann says when complete it would have the capacity to address water supply water needs of up to 50% of the population.
There has been considerable opposition to the project with many saying it will not solve Dublin’s water problems due to the amount of leakage in the system.
Public consultation information events are taking place at the Lakeside Hotel in Ballina from 4 to 8pm this evening (Wednesday) and from 4 to 8pm on Thursday at the Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh.
Kay Mullane from the River Shannon Protection Alliance believes that the pipeline is completely unnecessary and expensive.
She thinks that it will dry out the area after a number of years.
