A ‘Sign Café’ has taken place twice in The Carvery Restaurant in Tipp Town with a third morning planned for January.

The initiative caters to the Deaf community and those learning Irish Sign Language to promote its use in the community.

Anne Bradshaw, HSE Disability Services Officer in Tipperary, says communities have to make adaptions in business and services to communicate with the deaf community.

“We have almost 60 students learning an introduction to basic ISL and the idea is that every business and service and maybe shop and chemist – from butcher and baker to candlestick maker – would have a mix of every service in the town committed to sending at least one staff member to the classes over 12 weeks to learn basic Irish Sign Language.”
