The support of the Taoiseach and the Government for the purchase of the former Convent of Mercy by Templemore Community Services has been secured by a local TD.
During Leaders Questions in the Dáil Deputy Michael Lowry outlined the work of the Templemore Community Care Centre Project such as Day Care for Older People, a Community Pre-School, Traveller Support services and an invaluable In-House and Take Out Meals on Wheels Service.
However he highlighted to Taoiseach Simon Harris the limitations their current location and an ideal solution in the now vacant convent site.
While the Templemore Community Services will make the maximum contribution possible towards its purchase which will be enhanced by the generosity of local people Michael Lowry says the HSE has a role to play.
“The cost of securing this building cannot be undertaken without financial assistance from the state. The HSE has a duty of care to meet the needs of those served by Templemore Community Services. Their contribution to its purchase is crucial to its future.
“Taoiseach I’m asking you and your officials to engage with the HSE and other state agencies to secure their financial assistance to complete the purchase and alteration of this building.”
Taoiseach Simon Harris told the Dáil that the HSE seems to be committed to the project.
“My understanding is that the HSE has now issued a letter of support to Templemore Community Services in relation to its requirement for additional space to develop its services and they have committed to me that they will engage directly with Templemore Community Services. So the need for additional space is acknowledged by the HSE, is supported by the HSE as well and we very much look forward as a government to doing all that we can to support Templemore Community Services in its efforts.”
