Locals in Borrisokane took to the streets last night in the latest efforts to stop the relocation of a number of refugee families who have been living in the community since 2019.
The six families were granted leave to stay in Ireland in recent years and have been told by the Department of Integration that they must vacate the Riverside Accommodation centre today.
This is despite assurances given to the Borrisokane Liaison Committee five years ago that everything would be done to make sure the refugees could stay if they wanted after their asylum status was approved.
Hundreds of people took part in last nights rally saying the families involved have become part of the local community with their children going to local schools and involved with local sports clubs.
They are now facing relocation to Birr while the remaining families expect to be told they will be moved as well.
