Tipperary disability rights campaigner Cara Darmody has told an Oireachtas Committee the Government’s failure to deliver on its promises will have lifelong consequences for her brothers.
The 14 year old from Ardfinnan has been highly critical of the Government for not providing assessment of needs within the six months set out in law.
This morning Cara was the first person to address the Disability Matters Committee where she was asked what the situation is like in her home.
“My two brothers are severely and profoundly intellectually disabled and that’s really, really hard because they don’t understand a single English word in their head. Especially Neil because he’s going to be in a nappy for the rest of his life.
“He’ll often self-harm by using his fist to hit his head when he gets frustrated because he simply does not understand the consequences of that.
“Even with the foods they eat – they’re very picky and its so hard to see my brothers having to struggle every single day.”
