180 jobs are to go at Marks and Spencer with the closure of four stores in the Republic – their Clonmel outlet is not among them.

The locations that are to close are in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, Tallaght and Dun Laoghaire in Dublin and M and S Simply Food in Naas, Co Kildare.

The company has however said that a new flagship store is at proposal stages for Limerick – if the project gets the go ahead it could create up to 250 jobs and will open in 2016.

The announcements come as part of a review of its stores in Ireland.
