Fianna Fail Cllr Ryan O’Meara has been given the backing of Jackie Cahill’s sister in his bid to run for the Dáil in Tipperary North.

The Cloughjordan Cllr who won a seat on the local authority just last June has announced he’s contesting the party selection convention in the wake of the news that Deputy Cahill won’t be running due to health concerns.

Kay Cahill Skehan was also elected for the first time this year in the Thurles District and would have been seen as a possible replacement on the Fianna Fail ticket.

But she has now confirmed in a statement to TippFM news that she is endorsing Cllr O’Meara.

“I’m pleased to announce my endorsement of Councillor Ryan O’Meara to stand in the Fianna Fáil North Tipperary/Northwest Kilkenny Constituency General Election Convention.

“I’ve known Ryan for a number of years, and I’ve gotten to know him very well in his time as the Parliamentary Assistant to Jackie Cahill TD. He is a fine young man, with a great work ethic. I have personally seen the enthusiasm, diligence and passion that Ryan brings to the role of public service. Time and time again he has proven himself to be an individual that’s open and willing to listen and work with people from all walks of life, both young and old.

“I was delighted to be elected alongside Ryan in the Local Elections in June 2024. Ryan regained a seat for Fianna Fáil in the Nenagh – Borrisokane – Lower Ormond area and has proven himself to be great addition to Tipperary County Council and a worthy representative to the people of his area. Ryan was always destined to go further, and whilst this opportunity has arisen suddenly, I know he has what it takes to represent Fianna Fáil in the upcoming General Election, and I endorse him wholeheartedly.

“Ryan is exactly the kind of candidate the members of Fianna Fáil are looking to run in this constituency. He is a young, energetic voice and he’s steeped in Fianna Fáil after coming up through the ranks of Ógra. Through Ryan’s work as a Parliamentary Assistant, he has become well known in the North Tipperary/Northwest Kilkenny Constituency and he’s gained valuable experience in that role and understands the commitment and dedication this position will entail.

“Ryan is a promising and ambitious public representative, and he is committed to bringing a new wave of energy to the future of Fianna Fáil. I’m delighted to confirm my support for Ryan in his campaign for nomination in the upcoming General Election Convention for the North Tipperary/Northwest Kilkenny Constituency”, concluded Councillor Kay Cahill Skehan.
