The setting of malicious fires in parts of Clonmel town in recent days has come in for strong criticism from the county's Fire Chief.

Fire Crews were called to a number of incidents in the town yesterday where rubbish was being burned – last evening they had to deal with a gorse fire in the Glenary area of the Comeraghs which had spread to nearby woodland.

While tackling this another malicious fire – during which rubbish was burned – was reported in a field between Glenconnor Heights and Elm Park in Clonmel.

As a result a unit from Cahir had to be called in – Dave Carroll says this leaves resources stretched.
