A Tipperary based Senator has explained his poor attendance record at the Upper House of the Oireachtas.

Fianna Fail's Labhras O'Murchu says the main reason for missing 19 sittings of the Seanad in the first six months of this year were because his wife Una had broken her hip.

She fell while the couple were in the United States  – they were in St Louis to attend the U.S convention of Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Eireann.

Labhras O'Murchu missed 12 Seanad sittings following the accident on April 29th as he was looking after his wife.
