An €18 million revamp of Carrick on Suir has led to divided opinions in the town.
Part of the plans included the removal of some parking spaces from the main thoroughfare which is being strongly opposed by some businesses while others appear to be taking the view that ‘you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs.’
A new 33 space car park between Chapel Street and Stable Lane hasn’t placated members of the Main Street Business Initiative who are strongly opposed to the removal of spaces from the street.
Spokesperson Bobby Fitzgerald says traders on Carrick on Suir’s Main Street will be the ones paying the price.
“There’s 27 spaces being lost – 6 were already taken due to the Covid measures and never replaced – 21 spaces will be removed (in this project) which is 50% of the total parking spaces in the Main Street. It’s the only street in town where parking is being removed. 50% of the parking is being removed where 50% of the business of the town is done.”
