Funding is needed to upgrade the CCTV system in Littleton and other areas around the County.
Fianna Fáil representative Sean Ryan highlighted the issue at the monthly meeting of Tipperary County Council pointing out that the technology had moved on considerably in recent years.
The surveillance cameras were installed some years ago to combat roving criminal gangs who were using the motorway network to access rural areas.
Councillor Ryan says funding was provided for the CCTV in Littleton in 2016 but GDPR issues delayed its introduction.
“Thankfully this year we finally have got the clearance for it and I suppose one of the things we’ve done in tandem with that is we’ve set up a CCTV policy with the Council so CCTV schemes will now be funded going forward, there will be a funding stream there.
“The question I asked today is will we be able to access that funding stream to upgrade our technology in Littleton. Some of the cameras have been outside and they may have been water damaged and may need to be replaced.”
With funding now available Councillor Ryan is hopeful CCTV systems installed in areas like Littleton will finally be operational with modern equipment.
“The funding streams will be there, that will be allocated to the District and we hope to get those cameras upgraded so we can get the system up and running because remember the reason that communities like Littleton, Burgess and Birdhill were allocated that funding in the first case was because of their location.
“They’re beside motorways which are used as arterial routes for crime and we’re hoping that with this funding we can get this system up and running and finally give people protection in their homes that the motorways won’t be used for crime and if they are then people will be caught.”
