Call for action on former North Tipp wormery.

The Environment Minister's being urged to tackle the longstanding problem of thousands of tons of waste illegally dumped on land in North Tipp.

Shannon Verimicomposting at Coolross in Rathcabbin ceased trading in 2005 after the council secured High Court injunctions against it amid concern over the operation and an odour emanating from the plant.

The decision was welcomed by locals who had spent several years protesting over the site due to foul smells and health issues.

The company directors subsequently moved to the UK and so the site was effectively abandoned and the waste has never been removed.

Local councillor Michael O'Meara says locals have been dealing with this for 12 years and believes Environment Minister Alan Kelly must act now.

Councillor O’Meara says there is a lot of material on the site with no one sure exactly what it consists of. He says the whole situation has caused huge stress and anxiety for local people.
