A large group of Thurles business people turned up at yesterday’s Municipal District Council meeting in protest over plans for Liberty Square.

Local councillors were due to approve the report on Phase 2 of the redevelopment of the town centre after it went out to public consultation earlier this year.

About two dozen local traders and Chamber members turned up to demand changes to the recommended plans.

John Butler of Thurles Chamber and the Bookworm bookshop says what’s planned will be bad for business.

After a lengthy in-committee session of the council it was agreed that a final decision on the report will be delayed for two weeks to allow further consultation with Councillors and businesspeople.

The proposed new street layout will also be trialled for a number of days next week to see what impact it will have.

Cathaoirleach of the District Michael Smith says the concerns of local businesses couldn’t be ignored.
