A petition is to be handed over to the Cathaoirleach of the Carrick on Suir Municipal District showing the strength of opposition to planned parking changes in the town.
As part of an €18 million revamp of Carrick a number of parking spaces are to be removed from the main thoroughfare.
This has led to considerable opposition with the Main Street Business Initiative asking for this part of the plan to be reconsidered.
They have collected 6,670 signatures which they point out exceeds the population of the town and the 1st preference votes of the elected representatives.
Spokesperson Bobby Fitzgerald feels this gives them a mandate which Council officials and elected representatives should listen to.
“Well, we’re supposed to be living in a democracy so what are the elected representatives going to do about this issue?
“What about the local officials? Are they going to ignore the wishes of the people of our town and its hinterland and give the two fingers?
“I walk the Main Street in Carrick on Suir most days and I’ve yet to meet one person who is in favour of the removal of car parking spaces in the town of Carrick on Suir that is already under-provided as regards car parking resources.”
