The matter came to light amid a threat by at least one electricity supplier to cut off power for street lighting to around 20 housing estates across county Tipperary.

They have called on the council to pay outstanding bills despite the fact that the private developments in question have not been taken in charge by the local authority.

Director of Services Marcus O'Connor says the council will not be paying for public lighting in private housing estates.

However Councillor Kieran Bourke says the local authority is already paying the bills in a number of developments in Carrick on Suir.
