The M8 has also reopened to traffic at Twomileborris after a truck went off the road in the dangerous conditions this morning and while the snow is now melting – further flurrys are expected again tonight
Travel chaos beckoned for thousands of Tipp motorists this morning when they woke to a winter wonderland
Several inches of snow fell across the Premier with the Slieveardagh area, Cahir, Cashel, Roscrea and Tipp Town among the worst affected.
It lead to the closure of up to a dozen schools in areas like Killenaule, Glengoole, Gortnahoe, Ballingarry, Moyglass, Two-Mile-Borris and Ballinure while bus services to many schools were also curtailed.
Speaking on Tipp Today Cathaoirleach of the local municipal district Fianna Fail Councillor Imelda Goldsboro said conditions were treacherous.
The heavy snowfall also forced a truck off the M8 at Twomileborris – resulting in the North Bound carriageway being closed for the morning. A crane was deployed to the scene to remove the heavy goods vehicle while snow ploughs were used to clear away the snow and sludge.
There were long delays in Rosegreen on the Cashel – Clonmel road after an earlier single vehicle collision resulted in the route being closed for a time.
The blizzard like conditions also caused power outages to over a thousand homes and businesses in the Cashel, Templemore, Cappawhite, Cahir and Thurles areas – most have now been reconnected but the ESB says around 100 customers won’t have their power restored until this afternoon or late evening.
With the cold snap set to continue and further snow forecast for this evening people are being urged to look in on elderly relatives or neighbours to ensure they have enough fuel and food over the coming days.
