The twin towns of Ballina and Killaloe have been awarded 'active travel town' status by Minister of State Alan Kelly.
This means that the towns are now part of a national assessment for Smarter Travel planning and have received funding in this round of €275,000.
This follows a comprehensive submission put forward jointly to Alan Kelly from both North Tipperary and Clare County Councils.
Minister Kelly – who has Government responsibility for sustainable and smarter travel – said that this funding will go towards a comprehensive list of works in both towns.
Particular emphasis will be placed on footpaths, pedestrian crossings, cycle ways, access points to schools, bridge work and signage.
