The country’s largest secondary teachers’ union could be about to split over an upcoming strike.

A grassroots faction of the ASTI wants to avoid industrial action due to close schools before the summer holidays.

They’ve put together a petition with over a thousand signatures asking for a special convention to discuss an alternative.

Noel Buckley is a teacher at the Presentation in Clonmel and a member of the ASTI Executive.

He handed over that petition but denies that he’s trying cause a division.

He says people approached them asking where they could have their voices heard.
