The British army was asked to send snipers to Fethard more than 90 years ago.

A letter from the Presentation Nuns in the south Tipp town calling for snipers to be sent in will go up for auction later this month.

The intended targets for the snipers were jackdaws and crows which were said to be ruining the potatoes in the convent garden during the War of Independence.
.
At the time the Irish were not officially allowed to carry guns so local farmers were unable to help out.

The letter from Sr Imelda will go under the hammer at Mealy’s, a rare book and manuscript auctioneers, in Dublin on April 25th next.
