A Tipperary based rescue group says cases of animal cruelty is on the rise.
The Haven Rescue in Templemore is appealing to people not to get a puppy for Christmas.
Just recently they rescued a litter of eight one-week old puppies which had been dumped in a field.
Tracey from the Haven Rescue says many animal welfare groups are already at capacity.
“We see it a lot all over the country and rescues are dealing with the fallout from all of that. They are inundated with dogs and puppies. Even at this time of the year they’re closed to adoptions at the moment.
Tracey says many people don’t realise the commitment required to care for a dog.
She told Tipp Today earlier that if you are confident that you can look after a new pet to contact rescue centres such as the Haven.
“Look at Mo Chara in Thurles – they’re another option for people in this area – look on their Facebook pages or Instagram. They have pictures of most of the dogs in the Rescue there. Then after Christmas adoptions will open again in January – talk to the Rescue and let them do a home check.”
