An animal rescue group says Tipperary County Council and local Gardaí need to clamp down on abuse of horses and ponies in the area.

It follows the circulation of a video on social media showing two small ponies being beaten as they pull sulkeys on a steep hill in Clonmel.

Volunteers from The My Lovely Horse Rescue have travelled to Clonmel today to make an official complaint to Gardaí about the ill-treatment of the animals by the young children.

Marti from the Kildare based animal welfare group told Tipp FM that occurrences like the one in the Clonmel video are commonplace.

“This is a welfare issue and it is a national animal welfare crisis. It’s all over – this is happening everywhere. And we’re hell bent on publishing those videos and photographs and showing people all over Ireland.

“It has to stop whether its children or whether its an adult animal cruelty is not acceptable.”
