Questions have been raised about the age of a supposed historic water trough which was destroyed in Nenagh yesterday.

The trough – located near the Ormond Hotel – was used to water horses and cattle when Nenagh hosted the traditional Fair Day.

There was uproar on social media circles in Nenagh yesterday when news emerged that the container on Kenyon Street had broken while reinstatement works were being carried out.

Workers from Kelly’s of Fantane were preparing to lay tarmac on the street following the completion of gas and water works.

Councillor Hughie McGrath – who works for Kelly’s of Fantane – says they are accepting responsibility for the damage caused.

However its authenticity has been questioned by a member of the Ormond Historical Society.

John Flannery saw the damaged trough yesterday.

There have been calls on social media for the worker from Kelly’s of Fantane to be sacked for causing the damage – however the company says this would not happen as it was a genuine mistake.
