Research by co-operative housing provider NABCO has also found 23 percent of people are afraid of losing their homes – that jumps to 38 percent in Dublin.

The survey is the first of its kind, and asked one thousand people about the challenges facing their households.

9 out of 10 respondents said new rules, which would see people taking out a mortgage forced to save 20 percent of the value of the property, would make it harder for people looking to buy a home.

CEO of NABCO, Kieran Brennan, says while there are some laws to protect those without a lease, he says all tenants should insist on signing one.
