For fifty years the town of Templemore has been home to the Garda College.
The training of members of the force was moved from the Phoenix Park in Dublin to the town in 1964.
190 recruits began their training on the 14th February, 1964, under the tutelage of 50 training staff at the new Garda college in Templemore…marking the start of a 50 year tradition.
A number of events will take place later this morning to mark the move from the Phoenix Park/Parkgate Street in Dublin to the then McCann, formerly Richmond, military barracks in the Tipperary town.
Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan along with other dignitaries will attend the celebrations this morning…the Scott Medal ceremony will also take place.
Following the lifting of the ban on recruitment, the college is to open its doors to more than 200 new recruits this year – over 30 thousand people applied to become members of the force.
Today's festivities will also include a tour of the college and a special recognition for those involved in the move in 1964.
