As concerns grow about rural crime in Tipperary and neighbouring counties members of the public are being warned not to keep a gun by their bedside.

Around 200 people attended a public meeting in Coolderry near Roscrea last evening.

They raised their concerns about policing in rural communities along the Tipp – Offaly border.

The meeting came in the wake of the violent assault on their neighbour 54 year old Richie McKelvey nearly a fortnight ago.

Many have suggested keeping a gun at their bedside to ward off intruders – however Crime Prevention Officer in the Laois Offaly Garda Division Sgt Graham Kavanagh says this might not be the best idea.
