SIPTU say they will fight the Bord na Móna decision to close down the briquette factory in Littleton.

The local union representative is insisting he doesn’t accept the reasons management are giving for winding down production at the mid-Tipp plant.

The Head of Bord na Móna Fuels, Eddie Scaife, broke the news to local staff yesterday that the factory would be shutting down by April next year with the loss of 69 full-time jobs.

The company says this is based on a review of operations at the Littleton factory and the one at Derrinlough in County Offaly which will now be kept open.

SIPTU rep Seamus Taylor says they’ll do everything they can to get the decision reversed.
