The citation reads that by performing search and rescue missions for innocent civilians in times of crises, the volunteer organisation has shown true bravery in attempting to garner peace in a war torn country.

The White Helmets’ selection is a testament to the enormous bravery and courage shown by these ordinary Syrians who have saved upwards on 100,000 people.

They are made up of volunteers from all walks of life. Many have paid the ultimate price for their compassion – 192 have been killed while saving others.

Previous winners include former UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, former South African President Nelson Mandela, Adi Roche of the Chernobyl Group and the most recent recipient former US Secretary of State John Kerry.

The Tipperary Peace Award will be presented to the White Helmets next month.
