Tipp Town’s Main Street compared to a fairground ride

The state of the N24 through the town has come in for huge criticism in recent years.

Independent Councillor Denis Leahy told this weeks meeting of Tipperary County Council that driving along the main thoroughfare in Tipp Town was like going on a “hurdy-gurdy” at a carnival.

He and fellow local representatives have for years been campaigning to have works carried out on Davitt Street, Main Street, Bank Place and the Cashel Road.

Contractors for Irish Water commenced replacement of water main and old lead supplies on Davitt Street in the town last month – however Councillor Roger Kennedy says this work will take longer than expected.

Many Councillors had expected the works on Main Street to happen at the same time as the Davitt Street works.

However Director of Services Marcus O’Connor says this won’t be the case.

Sinn Fein Councillor Martin Browne has expressed his disgust that the works will not be carried out simultaneously.

He says they were led to believe that once Irish Water had finished their work on Davitt Street that the road from Dunnes on the Limerick Road right through Main Street and out to the graveyard on the Cashel side of the town would be resurfaced.

Fianna Fáil’s Roger Kennedy says if works on Main Street aren’t to start early in the New Year then some temporary works will have to be carried out in the meantime.
