There’s a potential risk to public health from unmonitored private drinking water supplies.
Today’s EPA report shows an increase in 2023 in the number of private group schemes with E. coli failures.
One in twenty of these water providers failed to meet E. coli standards.
In 2023, 21 private group schemes supplying 22,000 people failed the standard for Trihalomethanes – up from 16 schemes serving 16,000 people in 2022.
This included the Graigue – Pouldine scheme in the Premier County.
Trihalomethanes (THMs) are formed when natural organic matter in the water source, such as vegetation, reacts with chlorine used in the disinfection treatment process.
