A Tipperary charity shop was one of a number around the country to close following contact from the Charities Regulator.

They had been issued with a “cease and desist” letter by the regulator.

The Carrick on Suir River Rescue Group operated the shop on the towns Main Street – proceeds were used to fund the work of the volunteer group which has its base on the Quays in Carrick.

The shop has closed along with two others who were also contacted by the Charities Regulator – they were the Second Chance Boutique in Belmullet and the Charity Boutique in Naas.

The Twist charity shop in Sligo closed down following the successful prosecution of its owner by the regulator.

Another 7 shops around the country no longer market themselves as “charity shops” according to the regulator.

Chief Executive John Farrell says all charity shops must operate as part of a registered charity and all proceeds must go towards that charity’s charitable purpose.

He is encouraging the public to contact the regulator if they see a shop that they think, or any reasonable person would think, is a charity shop, but is not part of a registered charity.
