Tipp charities get €31,000 from court poor box in 2016

Tipperary charities got a 31-thousand Euro windfall from the court poor box last year.

More than a million and a half was paid in by people found guilty of minor offences instead of a harsher punishment across the country

21 Charities in Tipperary got 31-thousand-420 Euro last year from the Court Poor Box.

The biggest beneficiaries were Clonmel Og Juvenile GAA club who recieved 6-thousand and the Clonmel Red Cross who were awarded 4-thousand euro.

The other 19 shared various differing amount in the hundred or thousands of euro.

People found guilty on minor offences in Irish courts are often given the option of contributing to the Poor box instead of facing tougher sanctions but the system is sometimes criticised for letting people off the hook for their crimes.
