A 68 year old local man was struck by the vehicle which failed to stop.

A technical examination of the scene has been taking place this morning.

The road between Glengoole and Ballysloe remains closed and local diversions have been put in place.

Inspector Padraic Powell is heading up the investigation.

Thurles Gardaí can be contacted on 0504 25100.

Last nights fatality brings to 7 the number of deaths on our roads in the last 7 days.

A six year old boy died in hospital yesterday after being knocked down in Dublin on Friday evening.

Three motorcyclists were killed on Saturday night in separate crashes in Limerick and Dublin.

So far in July 16 people have lost their lives on the roads – which is actually down on the same month last year.
