Tipperary is said to be feeling the effects of the abolition of Town Councils.

The county’s 7 urban authorities were abolished when North and South Tipp County Councils merged.

As a result Government funding for them has also been lost.

Prior to their abolition three years ago each of Tipperary’s seven individual town council’s received money to carry out works on streets and footpaths in the urban area – it amounted to a total of 1.2 million Euro in 2014.

The members of the Thurles – Templemore Municipal District collectively tabled a motion to this weeks meeting of the County Council calling on the Government to restore the grants.

Sinn Féin’s David Doran says Thurles and many other towns have suffered as a result.

The motion received the full backing of the council – a letter will now be sent to the Department of Transport seeking the re-introduction of the grant.

Director of Services Marcus O’Connor says when the Town and Borough Councils were abolished the funding they got was supposed to be allocated to the County Council instead.

The motion seeking the restoration of the grant will also be forwarded on to other local authorities across the country in a bid to seek their support.

Independent Councillor Jim Ryan says it’s only a matter time before a major insurance claim is lodged by somebody after a fall.
