The crash happened at around 3.45 yesterday afternoon on the road between Ballingarry and Cloughjordan.

The boy was a rear seat passenger in a car which left the road near the Pike and struck a tree.

He was pronounced dead at the scene – it’s understood the youth was originally from Mountrath but had been living in the Shinrone area.

There were two other occupants in the car at the time – both of these were also hospitalised.

A 22 year old man – believed to be from the Ballingarry area – is said to have suffered serious injuries.

He was initially taken to Tullamore General Hospital and is being transferred to St Vincent’s in Dublin for treatment to internal injuries.

A 17 year old girl was transferred to University Hospital Limerick.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the crash or anyone who was in the area at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Nenagh Gardaí on 067 50450, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

This latest fatality comes just days after a pensioner was killed near Glengoole.

68 year old Michael Stapleton was struck by a vehicle which failed to stop just metres from his home at Poynstown.

It brings to 6 the number of people who have lost their lives on Tipperary’s roads in 2017.
