The Taoiseach says Cara Darmody is ‘absolutely right’ to be disappointed in the lack of progress he’s been able to make in delivering autism services.
The 13-year-old campaigner from Ardfinnan told Tipp Today after meeting Simon Harris this week that she was a ‘little bit disappointed’ that the HSE was still not meeting the legal requirement to provide an Assessment of Needs for autistic children within 12 months.
Speaking to Tipp FM News on his visit to Clonmel yesterday the Taoiseach says he completely understands her disappointment.
However Simon Harris says he has too much respect for Cara to make promises to her that he can’t keep.
Her two brothers are severely autistic and she has been a tireless campaigner for better services since she was 11.
The Taoiseach says he’s sorry he couldn’t give the guarantees she wanted but vowed to keep working on it.
Simon Harris says a thousand children with autism have had an ‘Assessment of Needs’ this summer because of Cara’s campaign.
