A number of horse carcasses have been discovered at a field near Cahir.

It comes as animal welfare activists have welcomed the backing of a motion at Tipperary County Council which calls on the Minister for Agriculture to appoint a horse warden in the county.

A field near the meat factory in Cahir is the scene of the latest discovery of a number of dead horses in Tipperary.

Cllr Catherine Carey received a call about the carcasses last night – she says there is no shelter or food available to the horses at the location – and has notified the council of the issue.

Cllr Carey says what she found was appaling:

This latest discovery comes as members of Tipperary County Council yesterday backed a motion from Cllr Carey calling for the appointment of a horse warden in Tipperary.

Such an role comes within the remit of the Department of Agriculture and not the local authority – so it’s writing to the Department to sanction their request.

All of this was sparked by the grim discovery of dead and dying horses in South Tipperary before Christmas – and this latest discovery has revived calls for something to be done immediately.

Sue Walker of Action for Animal Welfare Ireland says they’ll be having another public meeting on the issue:

She, along with her colleague Ann Williamson, are calling for the government to appoint a horse warden of foot of the council’s motion yesterday.

They also say they are planning a protest to highlight the issue – which they say will bring Clonmel to a standstill.

Sue Walker says the issue has gone on far too long – and the government needs to do something to rectify the situation:
