President Michael D Higgins will be in Tipperary this week to officially open the Community Amphitheatre in Ireland’s first ecovillage.

With a seating capacity for more than 250 people, the amphitheatre is a new performance space designed to stage a diverse range of events, from drama to music concerts, as well as talks, screenings and recitals.

It also incorporates a commemorative inscription in honour of Thomas MacDonagh, the Cloughjordan native and poet, who was involved in signing the 1916 Proclamation.

The event, which is open to the public, takes place on Friday at 3.30pm, and will include performances by local artists. Those in attendance will also be addressed by President Higgins.

Professor Peadar Kirby is the chair of Sustainable Projects Ireland, the company established to build and run Cloughjordan ecovillage where the amphitheatre is located – he says it’s very appropriate that the president will be opening the amphitheatre.
