County hurling championship underway

The opening round of the Tipperary County hurling championship got underway last evening.

Killenaule took on Burgess in Templemore where Killenaule ran out 1-18 to 1-16 winners.

Both goals there came inthe first half, Tony Doyle hit the Killenaule goal, and Eoin Hogan hit the Burgess goal.

Killenaule manager Kenneth Browne says the early goal for his side settled the nerves.
Meanwhile, defending county champions Thurles Sarsfields open their campaign this evening against Carrick Swans in Cashel at 7pm.

Thurles Sarsfields are the team to beat in this years’ Championship, having won the title three years in a row.

However, their Chairman Michael Maher says there are plenty of good teams around the county.

Other games down for decision this evening include:

Drom & Inch v Portroe in Dolla at 6:30
Ballingarry v Newport in Dundrum at 7:00
J.K. Brackens v Borrisokane in Cloughjordan at 7:00
Kiladangan v Borris-Ileigh in Nenagh at 7:00

Tipperary County Board Chairman Michael Bourke says the county leagues have prepared club players well for the opening rounds of the county championship.

Clubs have been readying themselves for the championship season which kicks off this weekend.

At Thursday night’s County Board meeting club representatives praised the county league structure this year.

Michael Bourke says the games have benefitted club players, and says there’s a huge variety of games on over the next two weekends.

Meanwhile, in the Intermediate Club Championship Galtee Rovers faced off against Kilsheelan Kilcash last night. Kilsheelan/Kilcash won that one 1-14 to 13 points.

Down for decision today in the Intermediate Championship is Boherlahan and St Marys Clonmel in Group 3 at 7pm New Inn.
