More than 23,000 people were treated on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick in 2024.
End of year figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show the facility which covers North Tipp, Limerick and Clare was by far the most overcrowded in the country.

23,203 people who were admitted to the hospital were left without a bed making it by far the most overcrowded medical facility in the country.
Cork University Hospital was next in line at 13,162 – more than 10,000 fewer than UHL.
The Limerick figures were up more than 1,750 on 2023 and 17,000 more than 2014 – a jump of 277%.
The number of patients left without a bed at TUH in Clonmel last year was 2,285 – a reduction of nearly 600 on 2023.
Nationally the INMO recorded 122,166 patients having to be cared for on trolleys last year which means UHL accounted for 19% of the total.
